NOAA's Climate Prediction Center is carrying an El Niño Advisory in its discussion issued August 13, 2026, and the numbers are not modest. Sea surface temperatures in the eastern equatorial Pacific are already running more than 2.0°C above average. The agency puts the odds of a "very strong" El Niño for fall and winter 2026-27 at greater than 90 percent, and gives a 69 percent chance the event tops +2.5°C in October through December. That would make it stronger than any El Niño since the record starts in 1950. Every ice fishing forecast being drafted right now quietly assumes a normal freeze-up. That assumption deserves a harder look, and so does anything built on top of it, including this piece.
Here is the part that gets skipped. A seasonal outlook is a probability statement about a three-month average across a large region. It is not a schedule. It cannot tell you when your lake will lock up, and neither can I.
What the outlook actually says
El Niño is the warm phase of the El Niño-Southern Oscillation, or ENSO, a back-and-forth in Pacific sea surface temperature and atmospheric pressure that shifts where the jet stream sets up over North America. Move the jet, and you move where storms track and where cold air pools.
The expected US pattern for a strong event looks like this:
- Warmer than average across the Midwest and Northeast
- Drier across the Ohio Valley and Great Lakes
- Wetter along the Gulf Coast and Southeast
- Warmer across the Northwest
- Wetter across the Southwest
Warm and dry over the northern ice belt is the combination that should get an ice angler's attention. Warm delays the freeze. Dry means less early snow, which cuts both ways and which I will come back to.
One thing worth stating plainly: NOAA's formal Winter Outlook, the seasonal temperature and precipitation product most of these predictions eventually get pinned to, typically comes out in mid-October. As of early September 2026 it has not been released. Anyone publishing a confident winter forecast right now is working from the ENSO discussion and their own inference, same as I am.
Why a strong signal still tells you almost nothing about your lake
ENSO strength correlates with regional temperature and precipitation tendencies. It does not correlate with any specific lake's freeze date. Those are different claims, and the distance between them is where most bad winter predictions live.
Three reasons to hold this loosely:
- Strong El Niño winters have still delivered severe cold outbreaks. A warm-leaning seasonal average is an average. It can hide a brutal three-week stretch that makes perfectly good ice, and it usually does hide something.
- The signal is regional, your lake is not. Depth, surface area, wind exposure, inflow and current, and the timing of the first meaningful snow do far more to decide when ice forms and how it grows than a sea surface temperature anomaly four thousand miles away. A shallow, sheltered 200-acre lake and the big water twenty minutes down the road are not on the same schedule in any winter. The same physics that stacks fish at a predictable depth in July — the thermocline and how it collapses — is what governs how fast a given basin sheds its heat in November.
- Snow timing is its own variable. Snow on thin new ice acts as insulation and slows growth, and heavy snow loading pushes ice down and floods it with slush. A drier Great Lakes winter could mean less of that, which is a point against the simple "warm equals bad ice" story.
So the honest version is: if this verifies, the northern ice season is more likely than not to run late, thin, and unreliable, with more marginal windows and fewer of the long stable stretches people plan trips around. More likely than not. Not certainly, and not on a date I can give you.
A long open-water fall is not a consolation prize
If freeze-up slides three weeks, that is three more weeks of a fishery most people abandon in November out of habit rather than because it stopped producing. Fall walleyes push shallow after turnover, onto wind-blown rock and whatever green weeds are left, and a warm December extends exactly that window. Plan for it rather than sitting at home waiting for hard water that is running late.
It is also worth knowing that the electronics argument has followed anglers onto the ice: forward-facing sonar is now standard on a lot of hardwater setups, and the 2026 tournament restrictions are the leading edge of a rules conversation that will reach ice derbies before long.
The safety part, which is the real story
Late and unreliable ice is a safety problem before it is a fishing problem, and it is the one part of this piece I have no hedge on.
No ice is ever guaranteed safe. That is not a liability line, it is how the Minnesota DNR states it on its own general ice thickness guidelines page, along with two facts worth carrying into a warm winter. First, thickness is wildly uneven: the agency notes ice can be two feet thick in one spot and an inch thick a few yards away. Second, white ice, the opaque stuff formed when snow melts and refreezes, runs about half as strong as new clear ice, so the guidelines need doubling on it.
Minnesota's published minimums for new clear ice are 4 inches for fishing on foot, 5 to 7 inches for a snowmobile or small ATV, and 9 to 10 inches for a small car or SUV. Those are Minnesota's numbers, cited here because they come from a named agency. Use your own state's published guidelines, because they vary, and understand that the DNR does not go out and measure your lake. You do.
A warm winter produces more of everything that gets people in trouble: variable thickness, slush, pressure cracks, and long shorelines that look identical to last year and are not. Drill as you go. Check your own thickness rather than trusting a report, a Facebook post, or a neighbor's track from four days ago, and be willing to spend December fishing open water instead of standing on ice that is technically holding you. When it does finally lock up, a short 30-inch ice combo covers most of what a late, thin season gives you — shallow water, short sits, and a lot of moving between holes. The rest of the hardwater gear can wait until you have real ice to stand on.
The half of the map that gets better
A pattern that costs the North an ice season pays somewhere else. Wetter Gulf Coast and Southeast means higher, cooler flows into a fall and winter that often run low and stagnant, which is generally good news for inshore and river fisheries there.
The Southwest is the more interesting case, because it is coming off real damage. Lake Mead and Lake Powell ran at historically low levels in July 2026, and Lake Mead went on to set an outright record low on August 7. Farther down the severity scale, the fish kills have been ugly. Arizona's San Carlos Lake lost essentially its entire fish population and closed indefinitely. Oregon suspended bag and size limits on rainbow trout and bass at Thief Valley, Pilcher Creek and Wolf Creek reservoirs through September 30 ahead of dewatering, and Colorado removed limits at Antero and Nee Noshe, all documented by Wired2Fish. When a state tells you to keep everything you catch, that is a fishery being written off, not a bonus.
A wet Southwest winter would help. It would not fix that. A reservoir system drawn down over years does not come back in one good snowpack, and a lake that lost its entire forage base and its entire year-class structure needs a stocking program and time, not just water. The Great Lakes have their own version of a slow-moving problem that a single season does not settle — whether silver carp can actually establish in Lake Michigan is still genuinely contested.
Which leaves the same place seasonal forecasting always leaves you. The odds have moved, and they have moved enough to change how you plan, not enough to tell you what happens. Watch your own water, keep the auger and the spud bar in the truck, and check NOAA's Winter Outlook when it lands in October. Then measure the ice yourself anyway.
