How to choose an ice rod
- Length: 22-25" inside a shelter or when sight fishing over a hole. 28-32" outside, or when you want more reach and hook-set travel.
- Combo or rod alone: a combo arrives matched and ready to fish. Buy the rod on its own if you already have a small spinning reel you like.
- Tip: a soft tip shows the bite, the backbone below it sets the hook. Panfish want a tip that loads under very little weight; walleye and pike want more backbone.

Shelter and sight fishing favour 22-25", where a longer rod is awkward in a confined space. Fishing outside, or working a hole standing up, favours 28-32" for reach and a longer hook-set stroke.
Is a combo better than buying a rod and reel separately?
For a first ice setup, yes — the reel is matched to the blank and there is nothing to work out. Buying separately makes sense when you have a reel you trust or want a specific drag or gear ratio.
Can I use a regular spinning rod on the ice?
You can, but it works against you. A 6-7 foot rod is unwieldy over a hole, and its tip is usually far too stiff to register the light bites that make up most hard-water fishing.
