GET INTO THE HUNT

An out-of-state hunt is a different animal than a weekend at the lease. You're flying or driving with limited gear, hunting unfamiliar terrain, and you don't get to come home for the thing you forgot. The hunters who consistently fill tags on public land aren't the ones with the most expensive gear — they're the ones whose pack is dialed.

This collection is built around the actual checklist of items that survive every cut on a serious DIY hunt: a frame pack that hauls meat, glass that holds up at 800 yards, boots that drain after a creek crossing, base layers that work wet, a knife that field-dresses an elk without a re-sharpen, and the small stuff (game bags, electrical tape, headlamp batteries) that decides whether you sleep in the truck or in your tent.

If you're planning an OTC hunt in Colorado, Idaho, Wyoming, Montana, or any of the easier-access western states, start here. Everything in this collection is gear we'd put in our own duffel.

Frequently Asked Questions

What's the single most important piece of out-of-state hunt gear?

Your pack and your boots. Everything else can be replaced; a failed pack with 80 pounds of meat on it, or boots that destroy your feet on day two, ends the hunt.

Do I need a spotting scope for OTC western hunts?

For open-country elk, mule deer, or pronghorn, yes — a 65mm-class spotter at 15-45x replaces hours of walking. For timbered units or close-cover whitetail, binoculars in 10x42 or 12x50 are enough.

What boots work for both early-season warm hunts and late-season cold?

Uninsulated leather or leather/synthetic hybrid boots in the 8–10 inch height range, paired with appropriate sock layering. Insulated boots are a late-season-only tool.

Can I fly with hunting gear?

Yes — firearms must be in a locked hard case in checked baggage and declared at the counter; ammunition has limits per airline; knives must be checked; bows fit in a hard case as oversized luggage. Always check the specific airline 72 hours before flying.

How heavy should my pack be for a 5-day backcountry hunt?

Most experienced western hunters target 45–55 pounds including food and water, before meat. Every pound above that costs you elevation and ground covered.
