For Gulf Coast bull reds

The same moderate action and backbone that handles a big fluke or tautog also suits bull red drum at Gulf Coast jetties, passes and the surf. A 35- to 45-inch red in moving water can take a long first run, and a rod with real backbone lets you land it quickly so it can be released in good shape. Match the rod's rated weight to the sinker you need to hold bottom in the current:

• 7'0" spinning, 1–4 oz: knocker and fish-finder rigs on the jetty rocks, gold spoons and heavy paddletails at the passes.
• 7'6" spinning, 2–6 oz: longer casts from the rocks or the beach with heavier sinkers and whole or cut mullet.
• 7'0" conventional, 3–8 oz: anchored in a pass or ship channel with cut bait or crab in strong current.
• 7'6" conventional, 4–12 oz: the heaviest current and the biggest baits.
