Michigan hunters are about to run a season that is shorter at both ends than the one they remember. The December firearm season in the Lower Peninsula is now three days (Dec. 4-6). The January archery season is gone. The late antlerless firearm season starts Dec. 7 and ends Jan. 1, and every deer season now closes on Jan. 1. If you hunt the Nov. 15 opener and the days around it, you have fewer second chances than you have had in years, which turns the question "how long can I stay on stand?" into a gear question rather than a toughness question.
What actually changed for 2026
These changes were approved by the Natural Resources Commission on May 13, 2026, and detailed in DNR bulletins. The ones that affect when and how long you sit:
- December firearm season: three days, Dec. 4-6, with all legal firearms allowed in the Lower Peninsula. The Upper Peninsula muzzleloader season is also Dec. 4-6.
- Late antlerless firearm season: Monday, Dec. 7 through Jan. 1 in eligible Lower Peninsula DMUs.
- Eliminated: the extended late antlerless season and the January archery season.
- Limited Firearms Deer Zone: eliminated; all legal firearms may be used across the Lower Peninsula.
- Digital tags: optional eHarvest tags in the DNR Hunt Fish app; paper tags remain valid. Report every deer within 72 hours.
A larger change lands after this season: the DNR's wildlife conservation order applies a one-buck rule starting March 1, 2027. The sources we found are inconsistent on whether that covers the Lower Peninsula only or all hunters, so check the DNR's regulations summary before you plan 2027.
The numbers behind the pressure
Michigan hunters killed 129,520 deer in the 2025 firearm season, according to harvest stats reported by WGRD: 81,367 antlered (about 63 percent) and 48,153 antlerless. Reporting on the 2025 season described harvest as down from 2024, and firearm license sales in 2025 were reported as higher, so more people chased fewer deer. We could not find a like-for-like 2024 total, so we are not putting a percentage on the drop.
The takeaway is not that the herd collapsed. It is that opening-week sits are where a large share of the harvest happens, and with the December tail trimmed, the cold hours of mid-to-late November are the window you can still control.
The hunter orange rule that catches bowhunters
Per the DNR, deer hunters, including archery hunters, must wear hunter orange from Nov. 15 through Nov. 30. It applies on private land and shared public land, and in a blind. It must be on the outermost layer and visible from all directions. Orange camouflage counts only if the pattern is at least 50 percent hunter orange. This matters for suit selection: a camouflage insulated suit is only legal in that window if you can put orange over it.
Why a cold-weather suit is a different purchase than a jacket
Most hunters climb down early because they are cold, not because the hunting got bad. Layering solves that with five separate purchases, each with a failure point: a loud shell, a bulky mid-layer that fouls a draw or a mount, a gap at the waist. A one-piece suit moves the decision to three specs.
1. Insulation you can quantify
The Killz Heater Body Suit AP lists 150 grams of 3M insulation, waterproof and windproof construction, and a sealed hood. That is not a deep-winter parka rating, and we would not oversell it, but it is a stated number you can compare, which most apparel pages do not give you.
2. A way to shed it fast
Internal elastic straps crisscross the chest and hold the suit up while you slide out and shoot. It also carries on your back with included straps, which matters if the walk in is long enough to sweat through your base layer. Sweat on the way in is the real cause of the cold on stand.
3. A path to legal orange
Killz sells an orange overlay for the Xtreme and AP models. It covers the top half of the suit, attaches through a second set of zippers beside the main zipper, and the manufacturer says its built-in hood covers state requirements for orange headwear. For Michigan that means the suit works for both the early camouflage sits and the Nov. 15-30 window. Confirm with the DNR regulations summary that your setup meets the rule; we are relaying the maker's claim.
What we recommend
If you sit long in the cold and your gear bill is already five layers deep, the Heater Body Suit AP ($299.99) plus the Orange Overlay ($39.95) is a $339.94 solution that covers opener week. Add a Vycah Blaze Cap ($24.99) if you want orange you can wear while walking in with the suit packed on your back. All four sizes (Small/Medium through XXLarge) are in stock.
Venator has not field-tested this suit. We carry it because the spec sheet addresses the right problems: insulation stated in grams, a quick shed, and a legal-orange path. Our curation note on it is simple: we would rather sell you one thing that outlasts several seasons of layering than restock your closet every fall. There are no customer reviews yet, and we would rather say so than invent social proof.
Skip it if you hunt mostly warm early-season sits, or you are a mobile hunter covering ground all day; a suit is a stationary-sit tool.
